2007 & 2008 Toyota Tundra's Paint Quality

Many people on numerous Toyota Tundra discussion forums have complained about the 2007 and 2008 Toyota Tundra paint quality.

They put forward to Toyota that the failure to apply sufficient layers of paint, coupled with the lack of a clear protective coat on a truck does not provide the quality of product that Toyota usually provides, nor the quality of product we were expecting to purchase. We petition Toyota to look into the matter and to respond to each of the respondants in the petition with a resolution. Please detail below your Toyota Tundra Paint Problems and we'll make sure Toyota gets back to you and responds to this Petition!

"i went to my truck dealer and he said its airborne iron deposits that are stuck to my truck and are rusting, he talked to toyota and they won't do anything about it. the only problem is that the rust spots are under the chip guard plastic that was put on at the factory, so its not the stuff coming off the road and getting on my truck. i sent this to everyone in my email address book even if they don't own a toyota, they will email it to everyone they know and so on and so on, till it goes round the world, hopefully, i'm getting a lawyer for this to see what happens. email this petition site to everyone you know."

"The day after I purchased my 2008 Tundra I noticed the paint of the cab below both doors on both sides is uneven, sloppy and bubbled."

"this is my first toyota and will be my last unless this problem is resolved you buy a 38k truck and get a 99.99 paint job remember the power of free speech"
278. Jon Nettle
"I have been noticing the paint chips very easy compared to my Chevy, with the exact same Houston Driving conditions. My 2007 Tundra super white 040 paint code has chips all over the hood. What is UP!"
277. Josh Jones
"Paint is very thin and scratches easily. This is very unlike Toyotas I've owned before"

"paint chip on the hood on my 2007 double cab 4x4 5.7 the black paint is terrible sent it to be buffed and polished didnt help lots of spider web all over to bad such bad paint i new black was hard to clean but its a losing battle with the condition of paint not what i thought this is my 4 toyota "
274. John Slader
"Piant scratches much too easily, it has no protection"

"Paint Quality poor and To Thin of layer used through out the truck... i have a 2008 Tundra DC sr5 TRD offroad WHITE"

"I agree, the paint on my 2007 Toyota Tundra is very substandard to put it mildly."

"have had all of the same problems"
270. G Bochenko
"I have an 07 Tundra and my truck that's just a year old looks like it's 10 years old. Everything stratches it and I am meticulous about my truck. Poor quality paint and Toyota should issue a recall on it."
269. J Johnson
"I have a four month old 08 black Tundra and I cannot keep scratches off of it. Very thin paint. Both surface and below surface scratches and they do not buff out. I have five layers of high-quality wax on it and yet I still am getting surface scratches. I sold an 05 F250 and the paint looked perfect after nearly four years. This Toyo won't last at this rate and I am VERY disappointed in Toyota's quality in this area. Not what I expected and I'll be buying a Ford next time."
268. Michael Sherry
"My 08 Tundra has paint irregularties, I can see the primer in many locations on the truck. Was told that paint thickness was within tolerances. It does scratch easy and scratches do not buff out . Toyota should m ake this right for all owners with crappy paint. This is so unlike Toyota"
267. travelinman
"2008 Tundra, slate, very thin paint on sides of bed."
266. David Au
"Scratches and scrapes off WAY too easily. At least mine's white and touches up easily enough :("

"2007 slate will scratch if I look at it wrong. I'm very disappointed in the durability."

"I have a 2008 Tundra 5.7L DC SR5. I purchased this vehicle in March 2008. In the last 7-8 months of driving, I have 6 paint chips (front hood, both front fenders, and rear drivers wheel well) and one relatively large scratch on the rear passenger panel. This is on a truck with less than 11,000 miles on it and with only city/highway driving. I have not taken this truck off road at all. The paint quality is poor. Water based paints are known to be softer and easier to scratch. This is a known fact and the paint should have been made much thicker to compensate for this softness. I only wish I knew this prior to the purchase of this vehicle as Toyota never advertised this fact. They advertised it as a work truck and a tough one at that. Apparently this does not hold true for the paint."
262. Matthew Helm
"Blotches: I had noticed 2 blotches in my paint before buying my truck and got it in writing that they would take care of it (done with 'I Owe' document from the dealer showing 'buff out hood'). These are apparent under parking lot lighting and dependent on the angle you're looking at it. Took it back last night. Picked it up tonight. Blotches are still there, despite them claiming that they had taken care of it. Since the truck was parked so close to the truck next to it, I checked down the side for dings and ended up seeing more blotches that I didn't see before. Great! I don't trust them to go back and do something with multiple body panels if they can't get the hood right, so I decided tonight that I am going to accept that I have a sh!tty paint job and not do anything more about it. I am guessing now that this is a factory issue and not a fault of the dealer. Not what I was expecting from my first Toyota."

"Have a 2007 Salsa Red Tundra and very unhappy with the paint. The rep looked at it but only gave me empty words. He had no plans to do anything. My long reply is on the blog. "

"I have a 2007 toyota tundra trd dc 4.7, and the paint is less to be expected. The paint under the dorr handles is all scratched just from simple opening of the doors my fingernails which are always cut short scratch it everytime. I was lifting a brand new hose into the bed of the truck today at Home Depot and the nylon part of the hose rub against the bed and scratched it as well. Please help me fix this issue. Thank you for your time."
258. Lee Isley
"I have noticed that the paint on my 2008 tundra seems very thin with little clear coat to protect the finish. I have unfortunately scratched the truck in a couple places with very little contact. The quality sure seems to be missing in the paint area."
257. Randolph Scheffel
"I purchased a silver Crewmax this August. A week later, I discovered a deep scratch on the passenger door. I questioned the Dealership and all they would do is touch it up. It looks terrible."
256. Tavis Macalino
255. Guy Miller
"I have a black tundra with very thin paint. Lots of scratches. Very disappointed. My old 92 tacoma, also black, had a much better paint. In fact, the paint on the 92 is in better shape than my new tundra. I loved my 92 wish this truck was built with the same care. "

"I have had my truck for 16 months and have noticed the paint flacking off the edges of the doors an various scratches on the drivers side from the plastic buckles form by back pack. Not good from a consumer stand point specially with the Toyota quality we have admired for such a long time."

"the paint is tooo thin, Toyota need to do something with the issue..."

"I'm very diappointed in the paint quality on my 2008 Tundra. After only 300 miles I noticed chips on t he hood, and they have continued to appear."

"I have a black 2007 Tundra. I am very disappointed in the paint quality. There are chips all over the lower side panels. Scratches way too easily - under the door handles especially. It is starting to look terrible. Toyota should be embarrassed to have their name on it. I have bought three Toyotas in the past six years. This will be my last one."
246. David Wilfong
"VERY dissatisfied with the quality of paint on my 5 week old Tundra. I use the highest quality miccrofiber towels to dry the truck off and after 2 washes there are already swirls. Unacceptable for a top-notch automobile manufacture."
245. Daniel Barnett
"The paint comes off way too easy. I wtach the paint flake off the bed when I was loading cardboard boxes. I even managed to cause a deep scratch when I grazed the side of my bed wearing blue jeans. I am very dissapointed in the quality."
244. Bill Hanrahan
"Very easy to get paint chips down to paint level and I have 3500 easy miles. Rust starting to show through in places. Very disapponted"
243. Josh Weinberger
"My paint has chipped horribly at only 5000 miles... Even the E-coat..."
242. Patrick Kevin Ramone Jr.
"I have a 2007 Black Tundra and a 2008 White Tundra both of them have deep chips in some of the oddest places like the inside of cab that is always covered by the door. Not sure how that chipped."
241. Don Buccella
"I have a 2008 Tundra in nautical blue and the paint chips if you look at it the wrong way. Please help!"

"Truck is barely 1 month old and I already have 2 paint chips. "
