DELHI, the capital city of India purely features among the fastest- growing cities around the world. With sprawling over the West Bank of the river Yamuna and relishing the two distinct parts of Old Delhi & New Delhi, the city presents a sparkling mixture of modern living and past magnificence. With narrow and bustling streets of Old Delhi and dazzling commercial explosion of New Delhi, it’s truly a cosmopolitan city in the north of India.
Besides extraordinarily nurturing an old civilization, it captures the people’s and tourists’ attention with its modernity. Whatever the city unfolds in terms of splendid past is fairly synonymous with the history of India. It’s been blooming amid tombs, forts and monuments for centuries and even still enormously prides for its rich and glorious history. Even the constant activities of construction and devastations for years by different dynasties has not changed and faded the allure of this ancient and popular Indian city.
Irrespective of witnessing an unprecedented surge in its capital change (it holds the distinction of becoming the capital on eight different occasions, the city still brings forth a charming blend of some intact and ruined monuments.
Delhi, for the first time, came into prominence during the period of the great epic, Mahabharata when the Pandavas set Indraprastha at Delhi as their capital in c. 1450 BC. It then witnessed the rule of the Khalji Dynasty under the rule of Ala-ud-Din Khalji from 1311to around the start of the 14th century before finally paving way for the great Mughal Dynasty.
Shah Jahan, one of the greatest Mughal Kings shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi in 1648 AD and fashioned most of the present beautiful buildings of the city. After the Mughal, it was the British who made full use of the city well before being finally expelled in 1947. And since then, the city is on a fast track of growth and expansion.
The current Delhi is a commercial hub with various tourist attractions that assure a fine mix of history, freedom struggle and modernity. You can have a look at the vibrant and exciting shopping complex of Connaught Place and then proceed to the Delhi Haat for handicraft goods and scrumptious food bonanza. The brilliance of Mughal architecture is observed through Red Fort and Qutub Minar.
And if you love shopping cheap items in exciting range, then Janpath is for you; spiritual peace is had at the Lotus temple. Moreover, the places like Rajpath, India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhawan would best illustrate the potency of the British era. The Delhi Metro and Akshardham Temple would surely delight you no end.
